"The spirit of Electric Avenue"
Most will look at a painting and ask what's it all about?
There is much talk of development at Electric Avenue in Brixton. There are clearly arguments for and against Indeed the Victorians installed Grand electrified canopies, which were a first at the time.
I like to remember it as it was in the late 70s before the remnants of the Victorian canopies were removed. The market lane evening still had that something special that many of us remember especially the end of day bargains.
My works often reflect on our memories of the past as opposed to as it is today..this for me is to engage the viewer in the atmosphere, sounds and smells of the place of interest. When I look at this painting there is dampness in the air, perhaps it's been raining...within there is a smell of fresh fruit and flowers.
I can hear a stallholder. "Fresh bananas pound a bunch"..and the ladies at the florist discussing Mums Birthday... a bit of chat in the background, "hello mate ain't seen you in a while, how's the family"...and again "fresh bananas pound a bunch"..and in that rare moment of silence and I mean rare...I can just hear the pigeon calling sitting up there in the old canopy, overlooked by many a passer-by these days...All of this going on amongst the rubbish on the floor which is only noticed when the market is closed and Fred the sweeper does a good tidy ready for another day..to the echo of "Fresh Bananas five bob a bunch last few"...
This painting by me simply called "The spirit of Electric Avenue", will stand to preserve those memories regardless of what the future brings.
