Spikes, bumps, spines, dots, shine, colours, curves and intricate patterns. This painting was a huge challenge but so enjoyable. When I set this for myself, I knew the combination and size was going to take me longer than any of my other work. Around 300 hours later- happy to say I am so proud of this piece. It’s amazing to see it come together - beautiful composition - the 2 animals enlarged and spilling out of the canvas- their colours & textures creating a feast to view.
Lobsters always fascinate me- large alien insect like sea creatures - some can live as long as a human. It’s hard not to be entranced by them - they fall into a unique category of affection amongst people across the world. Ever since I encountered them freshly caught off the Sussex coast, I played with the condemned creatures, with their banded-up claws in a box on the kitchen floor -before the grand dinner parties my parents used to host ; They stuck in my head and heart- and whether you eat them or admire them- I’ve always found them a worthy subject for art.
Pleased to present my latest piece ‘The Spiny Lobsters’ 2023. Available.
