Original artwork description:

Showing the waste from the coal mines, the Slag is being layed out and broken up so that it can be dispensed more easily. The heat from the heap is shown in the picture by the saturated reds and the blinding bright spot in the centre of the painting.

The painting is thick and creamy with impasto in some areas and thin glazes in others, a very dramatic and interesting piece of work.
