This painting belongs to a series of images exploring the many roles we play in our life striving to gain approval, attention, happiness and success. Playing a part often requires wearing a mask and a costume. Macbeth is described as "a tale full of sound and fury" which seems to imply that all the parts we play on the stage of life have no meaning at all. My understanding is that the roles we play show only limited aspects of ourselves and what really matters is found only deep within.
