Original artwork description:

The Sentinel
I created this painting in the studio, using sketches and color studies (made on location) for reference.
"The Sentinel" is a prominent formation in Bryce Canyon, Utah, USA. You can see it from miles away. Light colored sandstone reflects the colors of the sky in the shadows.
The whole canyon is high above sea level, and reaches freezing temperatures 200 days a year on average. The huge formations are created, over millions of years, by water in the ground that freezes and expands, breaking off tiny pieces of rock in the process. At night when it's freezing, you can hear pebbles tumbling down the rock walls, echoing across the canyon. Kind of eerie-cool. The western canyons constantly recreate themselves.
Oil painting on prepared Masonite panel. 15 3/8 x 20 inches. Unframed.

Materials used:

Oil paint, prepared masonite panel
