Artwork in figurative expressionist style representing the imaginary portrait of "Brandano", a preacher from Siena (1486 - 1554) known as "the madman of Christ". Bartolomeo Carosi, this is his real name, dedicated his life to preaching and invective, largely directed to stigmatize the powerful, as well as being endowed with divinatory abilities. He predicted the fall of the Republic, but encouraged the Sienese to defend their freedom. Traveled to Italy, France and Spain preaching with a crucifix in one hand and a skull in the other, pronouncing prophecies and invectives in rhyme that made him famous. He died a year before his prophecy of the fall of Siena came true (April 21, 1555) but his remains were lost, as he himself had wanted.
