The Science of Sleep - abstract representation of melatonin and cortisol molecules, the hormones responsible for sleep and insomnia. Inspired by Australian Aboriginal art, painted in enamel and acrylic on canvas
The rings represent benzene rings of 6 carbon atoms, the red circles are Oxygen atoms and blue are Nitrogen.
I painted these molecules during a prolonged period of insomnia. Melatonin is a hormone that helps to regulate sleep (molecular formula C13H16N2O2) and Cortisol is a stress hormone that disrupts sleep (molecular formula C21H30O5)
