Original artwork description:

"The Prophet Elijah" is a large romanian traditional icon painted on acrylic glass - plexiglass (reverse side technique) framed in wooden frame, also painted and varnish manually. Frame is provided with hanger so it is ready to be put on the wall.

Scene description: Piece made up of the icon itself, frame and back of the frame. The scene represents the ascension of the Prophet Elijah. According to the terms, the scene is blessed by Jesus who appears framed by a chain of clouds. Saint Elijah appears in a chariot of fire drawn by two horses of fire walking on the clouds like the archangel Gabriel holding a wreath. In the lower register, Elijah (double hypostasis) and Elisha pulling the coat received from Elijah - a symbol of missionary continuity. The entire surface of the icon is decorated with large flowers, stars, colored strips loaded with small variously colored lines. The scene is framed by folding curtains. Chromatics: blue, beige, green - background; yellow, white, brown, brown, pink, gray, purple, red, black, gold.
Modest and unpretentious, but brilliant and captivating through its vivid color, the icon on the glass of the Holy Prophet Elijah reflect a a piece of life ... trapped in a humble fir-tree, with a mysterious and ever-changing light.

The frame is made of pine wood and is hand-painted and varnished as you can see in the pictures attached. The back of the icon is protected by a piece of hardboard of 5 mm at the size of the frame. Is fitted with hanger so it is ready to be put on the wall.
Acrylic glass is a high quality glass made from hard polystyrene. The resistance to breakage is about 10 times higher than the actual glass of the same thickness.

If you want this icon at another size or if you want a painting with another saint or another scene, do not hesitate to contact me. I will make for you a recommendation and a price offer.

Painting icons on glass is a traditional Romanian form of art. Folk icons on glass are painted on the reverse side of the glass. First, the outlines are drawn with black ink. Then each area is filled with tempera or oil colors. This has been a Romanian folk tradition since the 18th century. In our villages, the knowledge is passed from one generation to another, from parents to children. Many artists remain anonymous. These icons are primitive, colorful, glamorous - and very modern as a plastic conception.
A „definition” of the glass icon says that it has to be done according to a model (izvod). It usually has no anatomical proportions, but balanced chromatic patterns . The models currently used are 200-300 years old.
The writing is Cyrillic. There are several elements of a typical icon on glass: it represents a character or more, the remaining space is bordered with flowers, rope or stars.

Materials used:

glass, wood, oil colors, acrylic, gloss varnish for wood, gold leaf
