This painting is talking about how sometimes while trying to keep something that has a high material value; people being pulled down and as a result live unhappy life.

The apparently unhappy figure in the painting is being pulled down by the golden pendant on her neck but it doesn't seem that heavy to cause such affect. So it's the psychological weight rather than a physiological one that causing that. The question is what she had to do to in order to obtain this pendant and/or keep holding it...

Sometimes people work hard or in professions they don't really like because of materialistic consideration while missing other important things in life as family, friends and maybe talents they have no time to realize...
More material doesn't necessarily mean more happiness and it's important to find the right balance and even the courage to give something up that has material value but pulling us down emotionally and spiritually.
