Original artwork description:

This is another drawing done from life in Brackenbury Village, Hammersmith. After drawing the other rooftop views I became more interested in the details of the individual chimney stacks and the additional things attached to them. I find the contrast of the old and the new very interesting as the original 160-180 year old buildings are adorned with modern devices, the chimneys that are mostly not used for fires anymore are used as an opportunity to get better signals and reception. I think it shows an insight into modern life and how the old and the new are existing together to meet modern trends and needs. I liked the fact that this chimney shows a timeline of life from the original use of the chimney for cooking and heating, to the T.V aerials attached for entertainment, then larger aerials, followed by satellite dishes for even more entertainment and the solar panels for power. I also included one of the many frequently passing planes that was off to unknown destinations.

Materials used:

Oil Pastel on 160gsm Black Paper
