A book that has always resonated with me is 'I Heard The Owl Call My Name' by Margaret Craven. The title references the Kwakiutl Indians of British Columbia who believe that when they hear an owl call their name they will die soon. In the novel, Mark Brian, a young priest, has no more than three years to live, but he doesn't know it. His bishop does, and he sends Mark into the Indian village of Kingcome to learn about life.
When I was painting this piece, all I could think of was this novel and how fragile life is - how it can all come crashing down in seconds. I also couldn't help but be thankful that we are totally oblivious to this fact which I guess allows us to get out of bed each day.
