I’m in awe in the fantasy land that is the historic Orpheum movie palace in downtown Los Angeles, California. I’ve painted two other views of this theater interior: The Orpheum and The Last to Leave.
When I was a child, my favorite hometown movie theater was historic (opened in 1918), ornate, and fantastical. Designed like an old-time movie set, a stories-high, stone-wall courtyard of an ancient castle encircled the auditorium. Surrounding us were balconies, towers, gargoyles, twisted iron-work, flickering torch light and, overhead, a sky transitioning from sunset to starlight. To me, a magical fantasy! When I first visited The Orpheum, a gorgeous,1923, Los Angeles movie palace, I relived that childhood awe, magic and joy. Before the movie even began, I escaped into a world of dreams and imagination.
My Artistic Inspiration
I’m a cityscape oil painter passionate about bright colors and deep contrast. My inspirations are the fluid light, dramatic vistas, quiet neighborhoods and stark landscapes of California and the Southwest. I paint with a vibrant palette and expressive brushstrokes to share my vision of an essence of the urban experience. I hope that the viewer will be inspired to see the world around them in a new, beautiful light.
