'The Old Way' is loosely based on studies of the supposedly haunted 'Chanctonbury Ring' on the South Downs. I am fascinated by hills crowned with stands of trees and by the ancient chalk roads and tracks which criss cross these mystical places. The many feet and hooves which have trodden them over the centuries, the passing moods, currencies and belief systems which dominated England year by year. l also love gathering storms, mercurial skies and mysteries... I hope that some of this atmosphere has seeped into the painting from my meditations as I created it and that you will feel drawn to mentally walk this chalk track into those ethereal trees at the crown.
