As the figure in the painting became similar in appearance to the object it's gazing at - the moon; people sometimes become similar to the things they constantly observe and admire as certain behaviours, characters, appearance etc.
It can be a positive if people make themselves better and grow in the process but it also can be negative if people adopt ill elements/behaviours or lose their own unique identity in the process...
