The Light Within was inspired by the changing colors of the leaves in the fall. At their height, they can be stunningly beautiful, and yet they are so impermanent.

As they begin to fade and the branches become bare, it can seem at first glance to be a sad loss. Yet it lets you see how every tree has grown and changed over the past year. It gives us a chance to recognize their transformation and celebrate it.

That transformational feeling is reflected in the red paint and gold leaf, which evoke the fiery colors of autumn. Fire is another symbol of transformation, and it reminds us that all-consuming change can bring spiritual power and enlightenment.

Between The Shadows and The Light Within are companion paintings. They can be displayed together or separately. Both paintings feature controlled pouring, brushwork, sponging, and collage with gold leaf, along with some experimental techniques I tried with just these two paintings.

The two 24"x24" paintings create a stunning diptych that can be hung together or separately.
