Artwork inspired by a Venetian legend according to which, in the depths of its lagoon, a terrible sea monster apparently dwells, frightened only by the gondoliers who, with their long oars, are said to symbolically pose a threat to the hideous creature. The constant presence of gondoliers plying the lagoon thus prevents the dragon from rising to the surface, whose frustration and rage seems at times to be vented by emitting powerful blasts, turned into a thick blanket of fog that envelops Venice, also known as "Serenissima." The color red, with which the work is most imbued, is symbolic of the lagoon city in honor of Venice's victory over the dragon of heresy and apostasy: red recalls the blood of the dragon killed by St. George, which dyed not only the saint's cloak but also the entire island.
