The background is created in several layers of oil paints, gold and copper leaf. The birds are painted in oils sprinkled with Diamond Dust which makes them sparkle in the light much like the shimmering feathers of a Hummingbird.

Hummingbirds have a long history of folklore and symbolism in native cultures. The Aztecs saw them as messengers between them and their ancestors or the Gods. In Native American culture, Hummingbirds are seen as healers and bringers of love, good luck and joy.
The sides of the canvas are painted too.
