The work The Inner Self depicts an ape in a state of introspection, gazing into its own heart. The anthropomorphic treatment of the ape actually represents human beings themselves. As the saying goes, "When all cunning schemes fade away, the restless mind ape is subdued; when the spirit is at ease, the willful mind horse roams freely." In Eastern Zen Buddhism, one can only achieve the realm of not being swayed by external things by subduing the distracting thoughts within one's heart and contemplating oneself. The work itself also draws on the modeling characteristics of Buddhist statues.
