This painting followed on from 'The Gathering Storm', using the technique of "weaved' brushstrokes through the paint. These abstract landscape paintings evolved from a series of smaller works titled "Elements", exploratory works where Paul would tease, mix and literally 'whip' the paint into frenzied swirls on the canvas. 'The Great Crossing' uses a wide colour palette with colours merging and combining to create a mysterious landscape. The textural effect of the paint again allow for the viewer to appreciate the painting in different lighting, or shifting light through the day. It is a work intended for the viewer themselves to take the first step of the crossing, to decide on what exactly he or she is perceiving.
