Original artwork description:

This is a second new version of "The Golden One" and instead of fish this one is made with watercolour butterflies.

I painted various sized individual butterflies in different blue and turquoise watercolours, and one in yellows and golds.
I then split the blue butterflies into three and added gold decoration to one group, bronze to the next, and silver to the third.
For this I used metallic watercolours and High Gloss Liquid Chromium metallic marker pens.

Because the butterflies swirl around and change direction the metallic decoration catches the light in different ways.
Each butterfly is shaped by hand with both wings upturned to enhance the three dimensional effect, and this helps to cast interesting shadows depending on where the light is coming from.

The result is an intricate textured relief design revealing individual butterflies on closer inspection.
And as with all my work the different shadows cast are as interesting a the piece itself!

Materials used:

Watercolours and metallic watercolours on card, in a deep box frame glazed with Art Perspex
