A World Heritage Site, known as the "Golden City," it's distinguished by its yellow sandstone architecture. The town is a former medieval trading center and stands on a ridge of yellowish sandstone, crowned by a fort - a sprawling hilltop citadel buttressed by 99 bastions, which contains the palace and several ornate Jain temples.
