Original artwork description:

This painting is of blossoms from five varieties of hydrangea cut from my garden. I’ve arranged them in one of my favorite vases, a favorite for its gracious curves and the pale jade (celadon) shade of the porcelain. Quite a challenge to paint the glass paperweight, a wedding gift that has sat on my desk for years. The orange embroidered Deponi silk cloth struck me as the perfect foil for the pale jade. The yellow and pale green threads of the embroidered design added opportunities for highlights among the folds. I added the third object, the white shell to draw the eye to the right side of the canvas, where my hope is that the viewer’s gaze will return from that bright moment along the lines created by the folds of the cloth. I painted “The Glass Paperweight” on a 1-inch deep canvas-wrapped linen surface, framed it in a 2-inch deep, 1.5 inch wide burnished silver (wooden) frame that bring the outside dimensions to 21x21 inches (53.3x53.3x5 cm). Signed and dated on the back, my insignia on the lower right, this work is painted with 500-year colorfast oil paint, sealed with archival quality varnish, and ships with a Certificate of Authenticity.

Materials used:

oil paint, wooden stretchers, canvas (linen), varnish
