Original artwork description:

‘Is there anybody there?’ said the Traveller,
Knocking on the moonlit door;
And his horse in the silence champed the grasses
Of the forest’s ferny floor....."

I have always loved the expression "the forest's ferny floor" from the poem "The Listeners" by Walter de la Mare which my father used to recite to me as a child. The poem is so inspiring and since forest and ferns are the focus of my painting too, I decided to use this beautiful phrase as its title.
When late summer gives way to autumn, the colours of the forest become increasingly vibrant. It is such a short time before the leaves and ferns are brown and the first autumn storms cause the trees to become bare. It is no wonder that, when the natural world around us is truly glowing on a sunny day like this one, it has come to be known as "Golden October". And there is nowhere better to experience the beauty of this magical time of year than in a forest and I am lucky to have this particular forest right on my doorstep! It was just a short walk from my home to this location where I set up my easel among the colourful ferns to capture the moment before it is gone for another year.

"The Forest's Ferny Floor" is an original, unique watercolour painting, painted en plein air in the forests of Saarland, Germany on high quality rough watercolour paper using Windsor and Newton paints. It comes mounted in a warm white mount to fit a frame size of 50x50cm and is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist.
