Original artwork description:

Large scale horizontal painting juxtaposing of "nature'"with surreal shifts in scale + genre. The landscape is based on a painting by Bierstadt which at the time it was painted it advertised the U.S.'s wild western landscape as a frontier destined to be claimed by White settlers, according to the doctrine of Manifest Destiny. This belief that Americans were the divinely ordained "masters" of the continent systematically ignored with dire consequences the presence of Indigenous populations, such as the Shoshone peoples. Appropriating cultural references including a quote from Tarantino's Inglorious Bastards, Au revoir Shoshanna!" changing the name to Shoshone is also a reference and protest of the current U.S. administration attempting to rewrite history in favor of white hegemony. Borders of the landscape show a full spectrum of color. Sides are painted neon orange. Other elements include a giant nude bather, a still life with a dramatic shadow + a disappearing red rabbit.

Materials used:

oil on canvas
