People throughout the world have been concerned by the mysterious disappearances, beginning in November of 2015, of five booksellers from a Hong Kong shop that sells material that some consider is in conflict with the mainland Chinese Communist government. The last man disappeared on December 30, 2015. Some believe the men are being detained. This painting has been done in support of them and of all of the people of Hong Kong. The central image is a wilted white orchid, since an orchid appears as a symbol of harmony on the flag of Hong Kong. A piece of barbed wire is wrapped around the stem of the orchid. The image also contains an ink pot since freedom of information is at issue. The painting began as a collage of newspaper stories that were mounted on canvas then over-painted in watercolor and oil. My hope is to raise awareness of the plight of "the disappeared" and of all of the people of Hong Kong as we hope for their safe return. In view of continuing recent events in 2019, this painting and its message is more pertinent than ever. The painting has been given a satin varnish finish for protection. Hanging hardware is already installed.
