The Cycle (2024) Original Oil Painting by Ryan Louder

The whole canvas is on fire in this oil painting on canvas - yellow, orange and dull crimson expanding from a turbulent burning centre.

Look closer and figures start to resolve inside the flames: an arm reaching out at the left, a woman standing above the fire at the upper right with her arms partly raised, a prone form at the bottom from which something winged seems to lift. They only hold together where the paint has been laid in distinct colours; everywhere else they dissolve back into the heat.

My paintings come out of my narcolepsy - I have REM intrusion, diagnosed at Guy's Hospital in London, and dream-like visions appear to me while I'm awake. Fire scenes like this are not planned; they surface as I paint. I have made over 2,000 works and sold more than 1,000 originals.
