'The Charente at Vouleme'
Oil on canvas, 40 x 50 cm
‘A harmonious combination… enough abstraction that the image is sustained by the eye; enough reality that it is sustained by reason and experience.’ (Jean Helion)
Middle of February (winter in France) when I painted this one. Lovely sunny day, but a bit of a brisk wind. In situations like this, the winter light inevitably dictates the colours and tones that eventually end up on the canvas. However, it’s a great opportunity to dabble in a bit of abstraction to liven things up a bit, but still leave enough reality to make it recognisable!
