Plunging the depths of a poor sod’s psyche.
The Briny Deep is an allegorical piece, exploring the vast reservoir of thoughts and emotions that coexist, often turbulently, in a person’s mind. The billowing clouds and the heaving ocean imply not only tempestuous weather, but also a mind in upheaval. Smaller elements imply an undercurrent of thoughts and a more concise description of the person's personality and background. The desert island along with its castaway, for example, could well imply long periods of isolation, be that a positive thing or not.
The painting is surrealistic and comedic in nature, however, it is the Expressionist elements that steer the narrative. The lines and irregular forms embody uncertainty and conflict. It can also be said that Expressionism is a naturally occurring phenomenon in nature regardless; that the shapes, lines and colours created by the weather stimulate emotions and associations in most people.
The floral background appears to offer some light relief. Depicted are plants and flowers often found in a Northern European bog (a wealth of beauty can be found in unlikely places). It could well be that the wallpaper is sodden too.
