Original artwork description:

I made these two pieces as individuals but as soon as I stood them together I felt they had a bond and should stay together as mare and foal. I begin by making a wire armature which I then encase with layers of glue and paper, in this case pages from an old and damaged copy of an English dictionary. The colours are made by building up several layers of thin paint in different and often contrasting colours before being sealed with gloss varnish. The measurements provided relate to the mother horse.
