The Black Cuillin, Cuillins, Isle of Skye
The Black Cuillins of Skye are an incredible sight, their rocky outline breaks the sky in two, the blue light of a late Winter evening adds to the drama. It is said that the Cuillins were made long before time began, when the Sun threw his spear at the old Hag of the Ridges (called Cailleach Bhur or Winter) causing a great blister on the earth. The blister grew and grew until it was 6 miles wide and six miles high before it burst and formed the Cuillins in a black molten mass. Winter hid under the roots of a holly bush and did not return and even now her snow is useless on the slopes of these mountains.
Printed at 32 x 32 inches with a 2 inches white border for a total of 36 x 36 inches.
Taken after a long drive down a winding single track road late in the evening when I thought I was lost. Then all of a sudden the road stopped at a small beach where the waves were crashing on the shore and the outline of the Cuillins lay on the horizon. I used long exposure techniques with my camera to capture this image and then worked to bring out the best of the fabulous colours of the Scottish landscape.

About My Materials
People often say that my images look like paintings because of the richness of the colours, the depth of the black and the texture of the materials I use. Canson are one of the oldest paper manufacturers in the world, they have been making paper for over 450 years in France. Founded in 1557 and printers to Louis XVI, their paper was used by Voltaire and Napoleon and the Montgolfier brothers used Canson paper to make the first hot air balloon. Canson paper was used by Picasso, Ingres, Chagal, Miro and many other artists. They have been making paper and canvas for photography since this art began over 150 years ago. Canson are Eco Friendly - they purchase paper pulp only from forests managed in a sustainable way which also makes them pretty special.
