Artwork description:

A delicate and atmospheric etching of a sweeping avenue of trees, with the entrance to Clare College below.

The grassy area behind the colleges of Cambridge, across the River Cam, is known as The Backs. This is the avenue that leads through, and takes you to the entrance to Clare College, seen at the centre of this print, at the bottom. As you walk along this avenue of huge trees, their branches touching above you, your heart soars.

This etching was created using a zinc plate, aquatint (melting resin dust onto the plate with a flame, to allow the ink to 'grip'), sugar lift, acid and burnishing. The professional etching ink is smeared onto the plate and gently wiped. The image is created by placing the inked plate onto the bed of an etching press, with a sheet of 'Somerset' heavy weight, white paper, on top. The press is then 'hand wound', pressing the plate and paper together, transferring the image onto the paper.

A limited edition print of just 25. As each etching is individually created, there will be slight variations, making each one unique.

Image/plate size 17 x 31 cm
Paper size 31 x 46 cm

10 prints are available, from a total edition of 25.

This etching was short listed for the Royal Academy Summer Show.
