The name Matthew is a shortening of the Hebrew name Mattathias, which means "gift of Yahweh," or simply "the gift of God." Even our obstacles are hidden gifts. •
This is a piece from a series titled The Monks Of Commodity. It was inspired by my lifelong interest in Christianity and my obsession with rap in the 1980's. My family had just immigrated from Russia and landed in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn in 1981 I was a Russian Jewish kid wearing black socks with sandals, trying to find my place among the Russians, the Jews, the Italians, the Latinos, the African Americans, and the Asians. Basically, I was being cooked alive in the melting pot of NYC... and on top of that I listened to rap. No matter how hard the obstacles, they make us who we are today. •
“Anyone who enjoys opera or film or fiction doesn’t have a lot of call to question meaning drawn from religion. The search for meaning in words or images - these longings we experience to be convinced, moved, or inspired by works of the imagination (art) - all have way more in common with religion than not. The stories of the Twelve Apostles are a huge part of how the Western world decided to teach itself what is meant by community, truth, virtue, transformation, forgiveness, friendship, loyalty." -Simon Worrall-
This is a bold and vibrant print on gorgeous thick fine art paper. The colors are saturated revealing the depth and tones of this powerful breathtaking image. The artwork looks like a painting and photograph combined into a single original piece.
