Original artwork description:

On the face of it, nothing can be done. The good ship is in danger of being rent asunder on the rocks. The angel cannot influence matters, she's there to guide after disaster has struck. Or can she? Well, I'll let you decide that, I have my own version of events, and you may not realise it, there's actually a streak of humour in the image, if you look for it...

I made the original drawing from a combination of my own vintage religious postcard collection, and some stock images, including one of the Fastnet lighthouse. I've always loved Lighthouses, so much, so I once made a film about one, and I love the sea, and I love old religious imagery. It only seemed natural to smash them all together and create something new in my own style.

It was a struggle, the original drawing took a long time. The piece was a large drawing, and the various elements had to work together seamlessly. After many hours of live-streaming its creation, I reached the stage I could be happy, and the Angel Of The Rock was ready to tell her story.

The drawing itself was made with a range of graphite pencils on an A2 (42cm x 59.4cm) piece of heavyweight cartridge paper (220gsm) and finished with a professional fixative and matt varnish. The image has a 5cm border and is supplied ready to hang, set in an archival mount and an A2 sized frame. It was shown at Oriel no 6 in Llantwit Major in 2024 as a part of the Winter Exhibition.

Materials used:

graphite pencils on 220gsm heavy cartridge paper, matt varnished
