Inspired by their early ayahuasca and mushroom experiences at Cholera in the Amazon, I painted a pair of portraits of Dennis and Terence McKenna, who each played an instrumental role in popularizing entheogenic plant medicines within Western society. Terence became an outspoken advocate for using psilocybin mushrooms and other plant psychedelics to explore transpersonal realms of consciousness. Based mostly on personal experience and some sketchy archaeological evidence, Terence espoused his now radical “Stoned Ape Theory,” suggesting that mushrooms had inspired a revolutionary advance in human speech and consciousness. In my painting, I depicted Terence with chimpanzees holding mushrooms, and I show him sporting a t-shirt bearing an iconic image of a rock-art "mushroom shaman" from Tasilli, Africa.
