It is evident that this is not about a fabric but a drawing. Then why this title?
Let's start from the beginning. I often talk about how in order to find inspiration, I take pictures of flowers in my garden, or ones I find along the road on my walks, botanical books and even on the internet.
In this case I was browsing the home page of my social media when I came across this multitude of flowers, a proper floral carpet that was so overwhelmingly beautiful. Dozens and dozens of flowers stacked one on top of the other, blossoms that peek from behind other blossoms and petals that barely fit between the leaves around them, flowes that display themselves while others ramain on background, in the shade, barely noticeable. It felt a lot like floral tidal waves, immortalised in this beautiful shot taken by a photorgrapher dear friend of mine.
The picture I'm talking about is what inspired me to make this drawing in the first place. Those who saw it before I got to work on portraying it thought I was mad.
I was conscious it was going to be the most challening drawing I had ever made un until that point and that's why I took it as a mission. I draw and coloured with love and passion hundreds if not thousands tiny petals and delicate little leaves to bring “Asters” - the flowers - to life. A work that requires patience, to some, but I do not feel impatient since the love for what I do so big and so is the satisfaction of seeing the flowers slowly emerging from the white paper.
It took a very long time and a lot of effort to complete this artwork that was that was in the making over the warm Summer, interrupeted several times by the unpredictable course of life, but in the end I made it; I completed the mission adn after about five months of work I completed the drawing. Hence the title “Penelope's Web”.
