An acrylic painting on canvas, this colourful and energetic artwork is a part of my recent "Ocean Floor" series.
The work was inspired by the amazing variety of sea life to be found in our oceans. My son and I were looking at a book about unusual animals, one of which was a "Sea Sheep" sea slug, a fascinating and amazing looking animal which prompted us to have a look at more pictures of sea slugs - there is a huge variety of truly beautiful and unique sea creatures that I had never known even existed. Around the same time I found a sea creature on the beach I had never seen before either - it was about six cm long and covered in small red spines but also the most amazing, iridescent fur. That turned out to be a "Sea Mouse ", another creature I had never heard of. So these paintings are a celebration of that - of the sea's ability to contain such myriad life, to continually hold new surprises, and to have so much beauty and energy contained within it. Like so much about the natural world we hold dear, these environments and creatures are threatened by climate change, so these paintings are also my exhortation to us all to nurture and treasure the ocean before it is too late.
