HANDMADE IMAGE TRANSFER PRINTS

I was moved to catch the abstract nature of the shadows cast by the teasle stems on my studio wall..................each print measures 21 x 28 cm

I wanted to make my painterly photographic prints into something more special and hands on. After research I came upon a method known as image transfer printmaking and knew it was what I had been looking for. I source the materials from the USA. After a frustrating time having to wait for a pigment ink printer due to Covid I began the painstaking process of discovering how to successfully lay my prints on to various papers.

The process is very involved compared to straightforward digital printing, and the success of the final print will depend on factors such as room temperature , exact timing before lifting the transfer sheet and paper type. Each print will be slightly different as I hand deckle or distress the edge of the image before transferring it to the substrate, in this case, 250gsm Fabriano printing paper, which is a light cream colour. I think the softer edge lends itself to the feel of the print and gives it an extra hand made touch. the end result is a unique hand laid print. The print is given a coat of matte varnish to fix it .

Materials used:

pigment inks, Fabriano paper, transfer sheet
