This is a pencil drawing of trees, branches and stream of water inspired by the woods in Glendalough in county Wicklow in Ireland. I have been visiting these woods for a long time now and a lot of my work has been inspired by it.
There is a mixture of deciduous and evergreen trees intertwined with rivers, ferns and other foliage.
The numerous branches create interesting shapes and negative space. This is what interested me to draw this image, exploring these shapes and spaces, creating a tangle of lines, dots and marks as life itself.
This drawing is part of the "Sticks" series I have been working on since 2020. It is based on a series of visits to local forests, sketches and photographs taken on site. The drawing is an amalgamation of this research and intends to create an idea of an unidentified place. It hopes to capture a feeling of direction with the fallen tree leading the way only to be stopped by the standing tree. The tangles of branches (feelings) weave their way around the streams of ever moving water (emotions). The work draws its inspiration from the complexities of nature inviting the viewer to explore the shapes and negative space created in the process of unrestricted growth.
The drawing is drawn with graphite pencil and charcoal on paper at 36 x 18 cm.
The drawing comes unframed. A frame is available upon request.
