The apparently bare atmosphere and the soft, faded colours that describe the uncertain light of a morning, caress the imaginary figures of St. Francis of Assisi and St. Clare, who are lavishing themselves in the embrace of the Crucifix, a miraculous witness of the encounter of the Lord Jesus Christ with the young Francis during the years of his conversion (1206). This relic of Franciscan history marked the life of St. Francis and before him he also prayed to St. Clare for the rest of his days in the seclusion of San Damiano.
