This work is a hybrid of painting and relief sculpture, formed from offcuts of wood arranged and painted on. I wanted to try and translate some of the ideas used in my painting into three dimensions, and to experiment with found materials and the process of assemblage. The work is influenced by modernist abstraction and the work of artists such as Paul Klee, Louise Nevelson and Kurt Schwitters.
The process of making the piece involves a careful consideration of the way that the forms and colours in the work relate to one another to create a sense equilibrium and continuity, and to evoke representational elements. The creation of atmosphere or mood through purely abstract means is important in my work.
