The sunset is a natural spectacle that involves all the elements because it colours everything.
I love the sunsets in the marshes because the water doubles the sun and the clouds and makes the sensations even more intense. The water reflects the grass and the grass is bathed in water. And the sun colours both the wet tufts of grass and the rippling water. All in an interplay of reflection and mirroring.
I wanted to portray this feeling with paint, to capture with fluid, quick brushstrokes the moment when the sun falls into the water and - like an artist - recolours the world.
You may have noticed that the sun is not at the centre of the painting. This is intentional, as I wanted the sun, the grass, the clouds and the water to all be equally important protagonists within the work.
This painting was created en plein air in April 2017, on the edge of a canal in the marshy area of Lake Massaciuccoli, Tuscany.
The work is painted in oil on paper, then stretched on 100% linen canvas and finally mounted on a custom-made fir frame.
The signature is in the lower right corner.
The painting is protected with a layer of satin acrylic varnish.
The work comes with a thin fir frame. The knots in the wood have been deliberately exposed to enhance the naturalness of the subject. The frame is stained dark brown. It is ready to hang.
The painting is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity signed by the artist.
“Sunset with grass and water”is a literal translation of the original Italian title “Tramonto con erba e acqua”.
