The bark on tree trunks is rarely brown. When they are not being affected by unusual prevailing light conditions, tree trunks are often grey, green, greenish-grey, off-white, silver, black, red. Painting trees in odd colours is becoming very conventional. The Fauvists - 'Wild Beasts'- painted objects in all the wrong colours even though this was just a pretentious affectation aimed purely at grabbing attention. Look at me! I'm different! I'm weird! David Hockney is fond of throwing a purple tree into an ostensibly conventional landscape, for similar reasons. The trees in this scene were clad in an orange wash courtesy of the setting sun. The big tree in the foreground was not in the sun, but subconsciously the artist has succumbed to Purple Tree Syndrome. But then again, perhaps, in reality, artists are not mad attention seekers and purple trees are the norm. This would be nice.
