Most paintings are a balance of tones. It seems to me that Vermeer's 'Girl with a Pearl Earring' perhaps, has been popular through the centuries because we fixate on the pearl that supercillously catches our attention. In reality, the pearl could be just a few quick brushstrokes. The real work is in achieving the right tones for the rest of the work which allows the pearl to take prominence.
Oil on Cotton on Board, Dark Frame with Insert.
