Painted on location, "Summer Morning in the Badlands" offers a long distance view of the Sangre de Christo mountains. I am attracted to the undulation and overlapping of forms of the mountains and the way light affects the hue and intensity of color. The term "badlands" refers to a type of dry terrain where softer sedimentary rocks and clay-rich soils have been extensively eroded by wind and water.

Even when the weather is perfect, painting on location is a challenge since the light is constantly changing. I use palette knives and silicon painting tools to apply strokes of oil paint, working quickly to capture my impression of the subject. I enjoy the marks and texture they produce, and rarely bring brushes with me when painting outside.
