This painting explores the interconnectedness of natural forms, highly textured work and the rich colours of a moorland walk. "Summer Land" is a place in the Peak District where the sky lark and curlew sing their songs and a fresh breeze carries the scent of heather and fern. With a moody sky, sunrays appear through the clouds casting light over tones of purple, green and red in the wild bracken. Your eye will wander over the textures in the foreground to the delicate clouds in the distance.
An original artwork, one of a kind, the painting has been created with acrylic paints on deep edged canvas, the sides are painted white. I begin with observation of the place making notes and taking photographs to work from in the studio. From these beginnings I work intuitively, painting some base layers with a brush and then impasto techniques layer on layer applied with a palette knife, harnessing optical mixing techniques employed by the impressionists and some of the methods of the old masters such as scumbling and glazing. I continue working until the painting reaches a natural conclusion. The result is a contemporary painting, lying somewhere between abstraction and realism. A frame is not needed and it is ready to hang.
