'Sugar Skull' is an animated collage depicting many pictures representing Day of the Dead festivities in Mexico. People embrace the skull motif so much they sell sugar skulls decorated with colorful frosting in bakeries and people have their names written on them. The center of the piece is my original interpretation of a sugar skull. I used a glittery white foam material and embellished it with crystal cheeks, flower eyes and a smiling toothy grin. The center pops out so you can also you the frame for a memorial photo of a loved one. I use butterflies to symbolize change. This is a colorful piece meant to encapsulate the love and revery I hold for for the subject matter in 'Sugar Skull. Death is a very complex subject and I have experienced great loss in my own life. The Day of the Dead helped me see death in a new light.
I love using objects to embellish my collages. They add another textural dimension and symbolically relate to the pictures and theme of the art. This piece can be placed on an altar with flowers and pictures of loved ones passed like an ofrenda or stand on its own.
