This second small study was done on 140 lb. Arches watercolor paper, using watercolor, followed by oils. The palette contrasts blue and Burnt Sienna, along with black and white, to support the theme, which comes from 2 Corinthians 12:7-10, when Paul speaks of the "thorn" with which he struggled. He said he pleaded with God three times to remove the thorn, but God replied, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Paul concludes with the words, "When I am weak, then I am strong," to express his realization that, when he is at his weakest and least able to help himself, then he is most dependent on God, whose strength then, by contrast, is most evident. This painting has been given a satin varnish for protection.
