Inspired by the Hayward Gallery's Strange Clay exhibition, I started to look at the medium. These figures started to emerge, with their own personalities. A set of 'strange things'. It evoked a very early childhood memory. As a very young child, I used to collect everyday household containers. I gave them names and personalities and, rather than play with them, I 'cared' for them. Until one day, they disappeared. I went in search of them, genuinely believing they were lost but now I suspect my mother threw them out. Perhaps worried by my 'strange' behaviour. Perhaps because she wanted me to play with 'normal' boys' toys, which I'd never had much interest in. So these pieces are a defiant reclamation of my 'strange'.
