I painted this still life under the impression of the appearance of pomegranates.
It was the first time I saw many fresh pomegranates, recently picked from a tree.
They struck me with their bright ruby colour. This happened in a southern country.
Where I live, pomegranates do not grow. So I saw them in the brown peel, and only their juicy pulp delighted with its bright colour and taste.
I recently refined this painting. The pomegranates are certainly beautiful, but I was missing some detail in this painting. I finally figured it out. So I made an inscription on the background in gold gilding. The inscription is a bit worn, it gives a hint that it's not just the fruit, but the province in Spain of Granada.
I love the ancient eastern lore about the pomegranate. Arab people still believe that pomegranate fruit brings wealth and many children into the home. Often people give paintings and sculptures of pomegranates to weddings as a symbol of love between spouses.
