Acrylic colour on handmade Thai mulberry paper (kada sa), deckled edge, 21 x 31 in., 55 x 77 cm.
The idea is based on a little stone like statue I picked up at the market long ago, which is now tied to a tree in the garden… I was keen to paint it on the textured thick parchment paper to bring out the stone relic feel to the subject. The tongues is just added humour to this whimsical painting!
The paper I use is a traditional mulberry paper handmade in Thailand. It is a thick parchment paper, strong yet pliable. I have the paper made to this size to get the deckled edges which adds to the textural effect. The close up pictures are to get a better feel for the texture and brush strokes of the painting. This texture is a crucial factor to the overall effect of this painting. Then there’s the work in progress and um, me with the painting.
When considering framing bear in mind to not cover up the deckled edges. This is one of the specialties of the painting, one of its charms. It is best displayed framed with a cut mat board around the painting so as not to cover the edges, thereby putting some space between the art and the glass and bringing depth to the framed art. It can also be framed simply with backing board and pressed with glass over the front without causing damage.
